All Treated Lumber is not the same!
There is a dirty little secret in the lumber business that most big boxes and some lumber dealers do not want you to know. The government requires that all “treaters” put a label on each piece of lumber to inform the buyer what you are getting. However they do not require it on your invoices, estimates or sales pitches. So usually what you get just says “treated”. You have to look at the label on the end to tell what it is and you have to look very closely! There are many treatments but the majority of what’s sold to the public is called “above ground use” or “ground contact use”. There is a big difference in these two. Ground contact basically has 50% more chemical in the wood and is recommended by the Southern Forest Products Association for any application within 18″ of the ground. That includes virtually ALL FENCES. Poole Lumber Company sells only Ground Contact Lumber in everything we can get. The exceptions are Tongue and Groove porch flooring and 5/4 X 6 decking. These are only available in “above ground” but we also have it in treated with water repellency called RAINWOOD to avoid warping and rot. INSIST ON GROUND CONTACT LUMBER. Do not just ask for “treated lumber”. If the supplier can’t tell you what it is, go look at the label! We also sell a broad range of all the newest state-of-the-art synthetic exterior products like TREX and AZEK decking and railing systems and AERATIS T&G porch flooring.
